Uma Internacional Fascista em Formação? A Fascist International is Being Formed?

We had just posted "Hitler: Irresistible Ascension?" when we read in the JN (a Portuguese newspaper) about the travel to Italy of S. Bannon, a former adviser of Trump, for the purpose of presenting his “platform ‘The Movement’" at a meeting participated by European far-right supporters, namely the party Fratelli d'Italia.

According to the news, "The Movement" already counts in its ranks with the "pro-fascist leader Matteo Salvini" (vice PM of Italy), the Belgian Popular Party, the Spanish Vox and "is dating" Marine Le Pen, the Hungarian party Fidez of which the current fascist president Orban is a member, and the leader of the Dutch far-right Wilders.

It should be noted that, in our view, the designations extreme right, far right, radical right, etc., are euphemisms that contribute to maintain the numbness of the masses, making them believe that it is just one more parliamentary democratic party, like any other. In fact, they are all fascists. But, of course, as in the past, they all masquerade as democrats as long as they are constrained to it. In the meantime, they go on contributing to the emptying of the very poor democraticity still running in the EU and building up their mass "Movement". It should be more appropriate to call such parties as pro-fascist, and we will start following this practice.

Let's go back to the news. What does Bannon stand for? He does indeed stand for building up a great mass movement which supports the following theses of the “platform”: “the working middle class has suffered from the crisis [...] created by the pro-emigration financial elite, anti-nationalist and anti-Judeo-Christian-tradition, which has delivered the world to China, guilty of all evils. [The aim of the 'Movement':] is to fight against the apocalypse if the 'Davos party' wins the European elections: the end of the human race”. Fascist demagoguery in full, only adapted to the current conditions. For example, the Hitlerian demagogic condemnation of the "capitalist plutocracy" has now been adapted to the condemnation of the "Davos party", seeking to attract the layers that suffer from the present monopoly capitalism but whose conscience is lagging behind.

Bannon knows that the terrain he treads is well fertilized, both by (1) the fascist movements and prominent fascist politicians that are rampant in the EU -- some already installed in the power and openly supporting SS parades and defending the rewriting of History -- and USA, and (2) the democratic emptying of the EU, its growing militarization, its destruction of labor rights including those of the trade unions.

Who funds Bannon? We have no doubt that it is the monopolies. But this issue deserves further study, as does the issue of the links between the European fascist parties and their financiers. It seems to us that Marxists with ability for such task should carry out this study urgently and, on the basis of it, publicly denounce "the millions" standing today behind fascism in Europe and the United States.

Book review of Hitler: Ascensão Irresistível? Ensaios sobre o fascismo [Hitler: Irresistible Ascension? Essays on fascism], Editorial “Avante!”, 2015, 207 pages., price: 12.60 €, 10.70 € in the Feast of “Avante!”.
(The book is also translated in Dutch and Italian. We haven’t found a translation in English.)

No capítulo 4, «A destituição do governo Braun-Severing.

O capítulo 5, «Origens e variantes do fascismo.

For those who think they already know everything about Nazi-fascism this little book may prove to be a surprise. The book presents a set of important analyzes on the subject, presented in a clear and concise manner, with factual data that we have not found in other publications. It also demolishes myths that continue to run around, even among the left.

Though focusing on German Nazi-fascism, the book is of great interest in understanding the fascist policies and practices that ramp up and grow in the so-called Western world, the world of the monopolies, which have never abandoned or will abandon the prospect of the fascist solution. As an example, it is enough to see what is now happening in Brazil with the domestic and foreign (USA) monopolies to resort to all means, including the media and the judicial and military systems, to place the Nazi Bolsonaro in power.

The author, Kurt Gossweiler, joined the Communist student organization in 1931 which was outlawed in 1934. The young Gossweiler, at the age of 16, then participated in the anti-fascist resistance until he was enrolled into the Wehrmacht in 1939. Having decided to desert to the Red Army at the first opportunity, he achieved this in March 1943 when he had been wounded. He was healed at a Soviet military hospital, learned Russian, and became a teacher. Back in Berlin at the end of the war he is at first a teacher at the SED (Socialist Unity Party of German) School in Berlin, then a district administration official in Berlin for the SED. In 1955 he begins a scientific career in German History at the Humboldt University, where he got his Ph.D. in 1963. Starting 1970 he worked as a researcher at the Central Institute of History of the GDR Academy of Sciences.

Having first devoted himself to the study of Nazi-fascism, the author then turned to the task which he considered to be of the highest priority and to which he devoted himself with mastery: the denunciation of revisionism in the communist parties of Europe, including the SED and the CPSU, which blossomed in plain light following Khrushchev's (in)famous report to the 20th Congress of the CPSU.

The book has 6 chapters, corresponding to individual articles by the author. In Chapter 1, "From Weimar to Hitler: The Causes of the Advent of the Fascist Dictatorship," the author observes with full application today: "In Federal Germany, as in other imperialist states, thousands of journalists, historians, philosophers and sociologists on the payroll of the State are struggling to hide the causes and forces that gave birth to fascism." Hence the importance of scientifically studying it which clearly reveals fascism as an international phenomenon, as a solution of monopolies and imperialism, in a "period of general crisis [...] to suppress and keep the workers' movement in check through terror and violence."

The author goes on to explain the support given since 1919 by the monopolist bourgeoisie and the large landowners to the Nazi party, the NSDAP. In their support, the army had a prominent role, by providing weaponry and money to the NSDAP. As early as 1922-23 major industrialists began funding the NSDAP. The author presents the sequence of adhesions and support of the German monopolists to Nazism in a way that we have not found in other publications. He also reveals the first hour support of foreign moguls (Deterding of Royal Dutch Shell and Henri Ford).

The author also demolishes in chapter 1 the widely held lie that Hitler rose legally to power in 1933 because of the election results, when in fact the NSDAP was in electoral decline. The Nazi solution was extracted from Hindenburg by the representatives of the monopolists and landowners. The Communists (KPD) had already warned in 1932 that anyone who voted for Hindenburg voted for Hitler. "[...] it was not the millions of Nazi voters of the petty bourgeoisie, but rather the interests of the millionaires who determined the policy of the Nazi government and the class character of the fascist dictatorship." Indeed, in Germany as in other fascisms, the petty bourgeoisie attracted by the nationalist and "revolutionary" demagoguery of the fascists was immediately betrayed once they had seized power.

Chapter 1 ends by explaining the reasons why Hitler's rise could have been avoided if a crucial condition for that had been secured: the unity of the working class. Unfortunately, even on decisive days, the leaders of the SPD (Second International) betrayed the working class. And this in spite of the fact that many workers of the SPD joined the communists in fighting the fascists. As regards the betrayal of the SPD leaders, the author provides overwhelming evidence, completely undoing the often-disseminated lie of the guilt of KPD's "dogmatism-sectarianism."

Chapter 2, "Hitler and Capital. The Real Millions Behind Hitler," provides a wealth of detail on how Hitler and his associates progressed in their secretive meetings with representatives of the big capital from various parts of Germany. Meetings in which Hitler, having as advisers large tycoons, members of the NSDAP, helped him to prepare the discourse explaining the benefits of the Nazi-fascist solution. This was the demagogic solution of "national socialism", which was nothing more than to forcefully harness the proletariat to the monopoly cart, to tie the proletariat to the "noble" "national" cause conducted by the "elites" of invading and enslaving other peoples.

Chapter 2 also provides very interesting details on how publications for intellectuals prepared by the monopolies -- such as, the European Journal prepared by IG-Farben's servants -- subtly spread the message, not only to Germans but also to foreign intellectuals, of the great benefits of a strong Germany with a European vision. In reading these passages the reader should ponder on the concentration of economic and military powers in the representatives of the strong states of the EU -- Germany and France --, in the EC -- dominated by the European monopolies --, also untruthfully presented as beneficial to a united and “social” Europe.

Chapter 3, "Working class and fascism. The Socialism of the Steel Barons" convincingly demonstrates how the German working class never bent to fascism. And also that the construction of a nationalist workers’ party was proved in practice to have failed. The author describes how in 1922 Hitler, in a letter to entrepreneurs, "showed that he understood perfectly well what was important to the forces of the ruling class": the extermination of Marxism. Despite propaganda and, as he said in his letter, to be the NSDAP "a strong organization, with unscrupulous and brutal determination", he failed to achieve that. The enrollment of workers into the NSDAP was weak -- the author presents figures on this and also looks at how the NSDAP cells in the enterprises were terrorist and espionage organizations serving the capitalists. "The Nazi party became a mass party not as a "national workers party" but as an imperialist party whose supporters were essentially petty bourgeois," but it would be wrong to regard the Fascist party as having been created "originally as a party of a radicalized petty bourgeoisie against the labor movement and big capital.”

In Chapter 4, "The Impeachment of the Braun-Severing Government. The Socialist Party in the line of sight ", the author, quoting Georgi Dimitrov -- "Before the establishment of the fascist dictatorship, bourgeois governments generally go through a series of preparatory stages and take a series of reactionary measures, directly contributing to the rise of the fascism" --, shows how step by step the bourgeois government of the SPD went on adopting reactionary measures against the workers. Te author looks closely at how this step-by-step journey of the SPD hand in hand with the reaction led to the complacent self-dismissal (!) of the Braun-Severing SPD government in Prussia, which was then replaced by the Nazis. A chapter full of lessons on what can mean today the step by step journey of "socialist" leaders hand in hand with the reaction, that is, hand in hand with the representatives of the monopolies.

Chapter 5, "Origins and Variants of Fascism. Fascism, Dictatorship, and Parliamentary Democracy," begins by presenting Hilferding’s and Lenin's analyzes of monopoly capital and imperialism. Analyzes that show, as the author says, that "once born, the monopoly tends to autocracy, not only in the economic domain but also in the political domain", following this by an explanation of why this trend is a result stemming from an objective necessity. This tendency is especially strong in financial capital, which is the cornerstone of imperialism. The author ends by analyzing variants of fascism of Central and Eastern Europe.

Chapter 6, "The Politics of the Nazis in the Balkans through the European Journal. The expansion to the East, yesterday and ... today?" presents further details of the Nazi messages transmitted by the European Journal, analyzing the Nazi appetites for dominance of the Balkans, appetites that the German monopolies maintain and in fact have largely concretized today. Just consider the role of Germany in the fascist coup of Maidan in Ukraine and the German economic dominance in Greece, Romania and Bulgaria.

The book has a Preface of very good quality, written by Jorge Cadima. It begins this way: "This set of texts by Kurt Gossweiler on the rise of the most terrible and violent form of capitalist domination that history registers is important. Not only to counteract forgetfulness [...] But above all because we are witnessing today a blatant and shameless attempt to rewrite and falsify the historical truth about fascism."

Introduction

Having won the civil war and crushed the imperialist intervention the CPR(B), CPC, CEC and soviets of the RSFSR engaged themselves onto the economic and social reconstruction. The successes of this reconstruction were enormous: in a few years the RSFSR -- USSR after 28 December 1922 -- made a great economic leap and became a great power. Huge progresses were also registered in social issues: ending of the scourge of unemployment, participatory democracy of the workers, liquidation of illiteracy, free education and health care, huge cultural development of the autonomous republics of Asia, etc., etc.

The enormous progresses of the USSR from 1922 to 1939 (17 years) remain to this day a unique case in the History. They were achieved and could only have been achieved within the framework of socialism, with the planned economy and people’s democracy. With science and technology at the service of the people and with a new humanist moral. For the first time in history a demonstration had been made of being possible what the bourgeoisie had always claimed to be impossible: a workers' state. And it was demonstrated not only to be possible but to represent unprecedented progress.

As a result of all this the socialist construction of the USSR would necessarily have a strong attractive impact over the workers of other countries. And, in fact, it did, as testified among other things by the great growth of the international communist movement in the 1920s. The international bourgeoisie quickly realized this and made every effort to counter this attraction. It did so through systematic campaigns of anti-Soviet and anticommunist propaganda by the mass media and from the pulpits of the churches. It did too by not recognizing and ostracizing the Soviet government, by impeding and boycotting commercial relations and participation of Soviet citizens in international events, and surrounding the USSR by a cordon sanitaire of hostile puppet states. In the 1920s the international bourgeoisie imposed that the Soviet government of 1/6 of the Earth did not officially exist. The cordon sanitaire of French invention served as a model for the “iron curtain” authored by Churchill after WWII. It was not the RSFSR and later the USSR who wanted to be isolated; it was the imperialists who imposed this isolation, afraid of the communist “contagion”.

The international bourgeoisie did not limit itself to propaganda and “containment”. Their imperialist leaders made every effort to sabotage the development of the USSR, by creating fifth columns that could destroy it, planning new interventions, and resorting to all possible means, including terrorism. This is what we will briefly outline by referring to quotations from Part II of the book by M. Sayers and A.E. Kahn, which we have already used in the articles about the civil war [1]. Sayers and Kahn used a large number of reliable sources which they refer to in the book. We will include these references attesting the reliability of the book, based on documented facts. Works by other authors, including bourgeois historians, which we have consulted, not only do not deny Sayers and Kahn but bring no significant contributions.

The Role of the Émigré White Russians [2]

-- With the end of the Civil War "The ruthless adventurers, the decadent aristocrats, the professional terrorists, the bandit soldiery, the dreaded secret police and all the other feudal and anti-democratic forces that had constituted the White Counterrevolution now spilled out of Russia […] through Europe and the Far East, into North and South America   […] bringing with it the sadism of the White Guard generals, the pogromist doctrines of the Black Hundreds, the fierce contempt of Czarism for democracy, the dark hatreds, prejudices and neuroses of old Imperial Russia."

-- In 1923 there were 500,000 White Russians in Germany, over 400,000 in France and 90,000 in Poland. The White Russians contributed to fertilize fascism in these countries. One of the White Russians who went to Germany was the Estonian Alfred Rosenberg who had studied architecture in Moscow. In 1921 he organized an International Anti-Soviet Conference and assembled a group of friends including the most brutal commander of the White Guard in the Baltic, the German general Rüdiger von der Goltz of whom we have already spoken. As is known, Rosenberg came to be the great ideologue of the Nazi party, contributing initially to financing it. In his book The Myth of the Twentieth Century he preached a crusade of Germany against Russia, which demanded a new German state in order "to form an association of men along the lines of the Teutonic Order".

-- The book The Protocols of the Wise Men of Zion -- a forgery used by the Okrana and the Black-Hundred to foment and justify anti-Semitism -- with its claim of "an international plot of the Jews" was translated and expands its circulation throughout Europe and the Americas thanks to the services of the White Russians. Let us recall that the counter-revolution and the fascists defended the thesis of Marxism as a creation of the Jews [3]. Rosenberg kept repeating, "At bottom every Jew is a Bolshevik!"

-- Under the supervision of a Russian Military Union hosted in Paris -- where Wrangel, Denikin and Petliura were residing -- armed units of White Russians were established throughout Europe, the Far East and America. They openly announced that they were preparing for a new invasion of Soviet Russia.

-- The French government founded a naval training school for White Russians in Bizerte (Tunisia), where thirty ships of the Tsarist fleet with 6,000 men were stationed. Large detachments of the Baron Wrangel Army were transferred intact to the Balkans. To Yugoslavia went 18,000 Cossacks and the government established special training academies for former officers of the Tsar's Army and their sons. 17,000 white Russian soldiers went to Bulgaria. Thousands more went to Greece and Hungary.

-- Russians of the White Guard entered massively in the secret services of various imperialist states. In the Baltic and Balkan states, where there was a fierce anti-communist persecution, they also occupied key government posts.

-- The sadistic Ataman Semyonov fled with the remains of his armies to Japan. His troops were reorganized into a special army under the supervision of the Japanese High Command.

-- General Krasnov and the Ataman Skoropadsky went to Berlin where they entered the German Military Intelligence. It should be noted that in Germany the Reichswehr was one of the main pillars of the fascist groups formed in the 1920s, supplying cadres and armament to the "frank corps" that fought the revolutionary working class.

-- In 1920, a small group of immensely wealthy Russian immigrants founded in Paris the Torgprom (the Russian Trade, Finance and Industry Committee), an organization that would play a major role in future conspiracies against the USSR. Torgprom's former Tsarist bankers, industrialists and businessmen were associated with British, French, and German interests. An official statement from Torgprom read: “The Trade and Industrial Committee will continue its unremitting struggle against the Soviet Government, will continue to enlighten the public opinion of cultured countries as to the true significance of the events taking place in Russia and to prepare for the future revolt in the name of freedom and truth.”

-- All this White Russian scum joined the interventionist leaders in Europe. General Gayda of the Czech legion participated in a fascist coup in Czechoslovakia in 1926 and remained involved in other conspiracies. Another general of the Czech legion, Sirovy, was the main traitor of the Czech army opening in 1938 the frontiers to the Nazi armies. The British general Knox of the interventionist detachment in the Russian northeast became a violent anti-Soviet, an admirer of Franco and the founder of the Friends of Nationalist Spain. Foch, Pétain, Weygand, Mannerheim, Tanaka, Hoffmann and other generals became leaders of anti-Soviet and fascist organizations. General Hoffmann, who we have already mentioned in the articles on the peace of Brest-Litovsk, developed a new plan to invade Russia which would involve a number of European states. The plan was endorsed by von Papen (the fascist who persuaded Hindenburg to name Hitler chancellor), Mannerheim, Horthy, Foch, Pétain, and Admiral Sir Barry Dornvile, head of the British Naval Intelligence.

Spies and Terrorists [4]

-- The British spy Sidney Reilly (see our first article on the Civil War) was one of those who helped launching the Torgprom. In the early 1920s, Reilly held leadership positions in various firms linked to Russian émigrés and friendly relations with Churchill and Hoffmann. He also had relations with clandestine anti-Soviet groups acting in the Russian territory.

-- The member of the SR party, terrorist and professional assassin Boris Savinkov (see our articles on the Civil War), was "[...] by 1924 being seriously considered in the inner politics-making circles at Downing Street and the Quai d'Orsay as the future Dictator of Russia”. Savinkov was highly appreciated by Churchill who wrote about him in his book Great Contemporaries: "[displaying] the wisdom of a statesman, the qualities of a commander, the courage of a hero, and the endurance of a martyr." Savinkov's whole life, adds Churchill, "had been spent in conspiracy."

-- Having served Pilsudski in 1920 Savinkov moved to Prague. There, “working closely with the Czech fascist General Gayda, Savinkov created an organization known as the Green Guards, composed largely of former Tsarist officers and counter-revolutionary terrorists. The Green Guards launched a series of raids across the Soviet borders, robbing, pillaging, burning farms, massacring workers and peasants, and murdering the local Soviet officials. In this activity Savinkov had the close co-operation of various European secret service agencies.”

-- Another group headed by the SR terrorist Fomitchov acted in concert with Savinkov. Fomitchov’s, group, with the aid of the Polish Intelligence, began forming secret cells on Soviet territory to carry on espionage work and to assist terrorist groups sent in from Poland, equipped with arms, money and forged documents by the Polish authorities.
“Later, in a letter to Izvestia on September 17, 1924, Fomitchov gave this description of the operations carried on by his group: ‘When these spies and detachments returned after the murders which they had been sent to perpetrate, I was the intermediary between them and the Polish authorities, for it was I who handed over to the latter the stolen documents and espionage material. This is how the detachments of Sergei Pavlovsky, Trubnikov, Monitch, Daniel, Ivanov, and other smaller detachments, as well as single spies and terrorists were sent to Soviet Russia. Among other things, I remember how Colonel Svezhevsky was sent to Russia in 1922 with the injunction to kill Lenin’.”

-- In 1922 Reilly introduced Savinkov to Churchill. This one decided to introduce him to the British PM Lloyd George. For that effect a secret conference in the country house of the PM was organized. Lloyd George, however, did not endorse the trio Sidney-Savinkov-Churchill since, according to him, there was no "world Communist menace".

-- Reilly traveled across Europe seeking out to persuade secret services and military staffs to give assistance to Savinkov. He succeeded in getting the support of H. Deterding who directed the Royal Dutch Shell (he owned the oil fields of Azerbaijan). Deterding became a major supporter of the anti-Soviet cause and an associate of Torgprom. He later gave his support to the Nazi party. (The Royal Dutch Shell, through the good care of Prince Bernard of the Netherlands, was one of the founders of the Imperialist International called Bilderberg Club, of which we have already talked about. It is still today a major upholder of the Club.)

-- Reilly submitted a plan for the attack of the USSR to members of European military general staffs. The plan was a variant of Hoffman’s plan. It involved counter-revolutionary actions followed by military invasions of White troops from Yugoslavia, Romania and Poland. Finland would block Leningrad and the Menshevik Noi Jordania [5] would launch a revolt in the Caucasus declaring an "independent" state under Anglo-French tutelage. Savinkov would become dictator of Russia. The plan was approved by leaders of general staffs of France, Poland, Finland and Romania. Savinkov was invited to meet Mussolini in Rome. Mussolini offered him various kinds of assistance.

-- On 10 August 1924 Savinkov went to Russia with an Italian passport, accompanied by officers of the Green Guards. On August 28 the planned uprising in the Caucasus broke out. At dawn, an armed detachment of Noi Jordania's men attacked the town of Tschiatury in Georgia, murdered the local Soviet officials and seiezed the town. Acts of terror, killings and bombings took place throughout the Caucasus. Attempts were made to seize the oil fields. But, in the meantime, Savinkov had been arrested at the Soviet border as reported by the Izvestia on 29 August. The insurrection in the Caucasus was quickly crushed by the mountaineers and workers of the oil fields. The New York Times reported on September 13, 1924, that the Caucasian uprising was "being financed and directed from Paris" by "powerful financiers" and "former proprietors of the Baku oil wells." A few days later the remnants of Jordania's counterrevolutionary army were rounded up and captured by the Soviet troops.

-- Veio então a retaliação britânica.
The Trial of Savinkov [6]

-- Savinkov's trial was open to the public. At the trial Savinkov provided of his own accord many unknown details of the conspiracy (they are worth reading in Sayers and Kahn's book). In fact, Savinkov tried to portray himself at the trial as “an honest but misguided Russian patriot who had been gradually disillusioned in the character and aims of his associates». He ended up being sentenced to 10 years in prison where he was well treated [7].

-- Savinkov's trial showed for the first time the kind of lies that the media, the Western leaders and other figures would reserve to public trials of traitors to the USSR. Reilly, for instance, told in a newspaper that “Savinkov was killed while attempting to cross the Russian frontier, and a mock trial, with one of their own agents as chief actor, was staged by the Cheka in Moscow behind closed doors”.
Sayers and Kahn comment as follows: “This was the first of many extravagant ‘explanations’ given by enemies of the Soviet Union during the years following the Revolution in an attempt to discredit the admissions made by foreign conspirators and Russian traitors in Soviet courts of law. These ‘explanations’ reached their peak during the so-called Moscow Trials.”
Later, Reilly was forced to admit that Savinkov had been tried publicly, but as Churchill insinuated in a letter to Reilly “the anti-Bolshevik patriot” Savinkov had broken only by being subject to a terrible ordeal [8].

-- Then came the British retaliation. In October, 1924, the Daily Mail announced that the Scotland Yard had uncovered a sinister Soviet plot against Britain: an alleged “’Zinoviev Letter’ purporting to be instructions sent by Grigori Zinoviev, the Russian Comintern leader, to the British Communists on how to combat the Tories in the coming election.
“Several years later, Sir Wyndham Childs of Scotland Yard stated that there had never really been any letter by Zinoviev. The document was a forgery. It had originally emanated from the Berlin office of Colonel Walther Nicolai, former head of the Imperial German Military Intelligence, who was now working closely with the Nazi Party. Under Nicolai’s supervision, a Baltic White Guard named Baron Uexkuell, who was later to head a Nazi press service, had established in the German capital a special bureau for forging anti-Soviet documents.”
H. Deterding had been involved in the actual introduction of the forged Zinoviev Letter to the British Foreign Office.

Conspiracies Made in the USA [9]

-- In the autumn of 1924 Reilly went to the United States where he jointly organized with white Russians support groups for his International Anti-Bolshevik League. «Vast quantities of anti-Soviet propaganda were soon emanating from Reilly’s office and being mailed throughout the United States to influential editors, columnists, educators, politicians and businessmen. Reilly undertook a cross-country lecture tour to inform the public of the “menace of Bolshevism and its threat to civilization and world trade.” He held a number of “confidential talks” with small, select groups of Wall Street men and wealthy industrialists in a number of American cities." The propaganda had an anti-Semitic component with the great dissemination of the Protocols of Zion.

-- One of Reilly's great supporters, financier of anti-Semitism and of the anti-Bolshevik crusade, was the well-known automotive tycoon Henri Ford. Ford founded a newspaper, the Dearborn Independent, and established at Ford Motor Company a specific organization to spread anti-Semitism and alert the whole country against the communist threat. The organization blacklisted all those who were considered a liability, including former President Woodrow Wilson.

-- Later H. Ford embraced fascism and was a great supporter and financier of the Nazi party and an admirer of Hitler [10].

-- Reilly's career ended when he tried to clandestinely enter the USSR across the Finnish border in order to join counterrevolutionary groups in Leningrad. Izvestia published: “The night of September 28-29, four contrabandists tried to pass the Finnish frontier with the result that two were killed, one, a Finnish soldier, taken prisoner and the fourth so badly wounded that he died....”

Not until several days later did the Soviet authorities identify the “contrabandist” they had killed. When they had done so, they formally announced the death of Sidney Reilly of the British Secret Intelligence Service.

Noutras capitais ocorreram ataques a representações soviéticas.

New Conspiracies [11]

-- As expected, the end of Reilly and Savinkov did not put an end to the attacks against the USSR. In fact, the crushing of the USSR was vital to the imperialists. As is still today considered vital by the imperialists, the crushing of any and all socialism of any and all stance of sovereignty countering imperialist interests. In the late 1920s the anti-Soviet forces began to take on an openly fascist tone, which deepened all along the 1930s and underlies the whole imperialist policy of France, GBR and the US to "appease" Hitler. To, effectively, incite Nazi Germany against the USSR.

-- From 1924 to 1926 contacts at government level progressed having in view to renew plans of attacking the USSR. These plans were defended by French President Poincaré, by Hoffman who held a series of conferences for generals and businessmen close to the Nazis, and by the conservative members of the English Parliament and British military.

-- In May 1927 the British police and secret services invaded and vandalized the Soviet trade organization in London under the pretext of seizing "incriminating documents". None were found. Despite this, the British conservative government broke all relations with the USSR. In other capitals attacks on Soviet representations took place. The Soviet emissary in Warsaw was murdered. In Leningrad bombs were thrown at a meeting of the RCP(B). By "coincidence" (?) during 1927 Trotsky's opposition movement within Soviet Russia was preparing to overthrow the Soviet Government. An attempted Trotskyite Putsch took place on November 7, 1927. A number of Trotsky's followers were arrested and Trotsky himself was exiled.

-- By this time Marshal Foch sent a letter to Arnold Rechberg, one of the main promoters of the Nazi movement in Germany, saying: "I am not foolish enough to believe that one can leave a handful of criminal tyrants to rule over more than half the continent and over vast Asiatic territories. But nothing can be done so long as France and Germany are not united. I beg you to convey my greetings to General Hoffmann, the great protagonist of the anti-Bolshevist military alliance." Weygand and Petain shared these "ideals" of Foch. No wonder they came to betray the French workers and collaborate with the Nazis.

A maioria deles possuía importantes cargos técnicos do estado soviético.

Millionaires and Saboteurs [12]

-- In the autumn of 1928 a secret meeting took place in Paris attended by important Russian millionaires of Torgprom and two Russians who ran a secret epionage-sabotage organization: Professor Leonid Ramzin, an outstanding Russian scientist, Director of the Moscow Thermo-Technical Institute, and a member of the Soviet Supreme Economic Council, and Victor Laritchev, Chairman of the Fuel Section of the State Planning Commission of the USSR.

-- The organization led by Ramzin and Laritchev was called Industrial Party “Composed mainly of elements of the old Rus-sian technical intelligentsia who had comprised a small privileged class under the Czar, the Industrial Party claimed approximately two thousand secret members. Most of them held important Soviet technical posts. Financed and directed by the Torgprom, these Industrial Party members were carrying on wrecking and spying activities in Soviet industry.” The sabotage actions covered several industries and involved several methods: delayed production; creation of productive disproportions between branches and between sections; freezing investments in key sectors which lowered the standard of living and sowed discontent among the population.

-- At the Conference an attack on the USSR to take place during the summer of 1929 or 1930 was announced [13]. The Conference discussed the possibilities for Ramzin and Laritchev to organize military support for the imperialist attack.

-- De Paris Ramzin traveled to London to meet with representatives of the Royal Dutch Shell and Metro-Vickers, a major British manufacturer of electrical equipment. Ramzin was informed that Britain would provide financial and diplomatic support as well as naval support during the attack. In the meantime Torgprom money was sent from France to agents in Moscow.

-- An émigré Russian millionaire, Riabuchinsky, was overjoyed at the prospect of the attack by listing in a Russian émigré newspaper "the many ‘business’ benefits that would result from the invasion of Russia. A thriving Russian economy controlled by men like himself, he asserted, would result in ‘the annual influx into the European economic system of such wealth, in the form of a demand for various types of goods,’ that the result might well be ‘the wiping out of the five-million strong army of unemployed of Austria, Germany and Great Britain.’" On the costs of the attack he commented: "By spending one billion rubles mankind will receive a return of not less than five billions, i.e., five hundred per cent per annum, with the prospect of a further increase in the rate of profit every year by another hundred or two hundred per cent. Where could you do better business?

-- The only reasons why the planned attack on the USSR didn’t take place were the dissensions in the imperialist camp about spheres of influence and because in 1929 one of the biggest crises of capitalism broke out.

-- O procurador-geral Vyshinsky procurou claramente apurar a verdade.
VYSHINSKY: Mas talvez Roginsky [o Assistente do Procurador] tenha feito?
THORNTON: Não.
VYSHINSKY: Talvez a OGPU tenha distorcido?
THORNTON: Agora sinto diferente.

Three Trials [14]

-- In October 1930 Ramzin and other saboteurs of the Industrial Party were arrested. The trial of eight indicted members of the Industrial Party took place at the Soviet Supreme Court in Moscow on December 25, 1930. Faced with the evidence presented the indicted had no choice but to acknowledge their guilt supplying details and implying Henri Deterding, Colonel Joinville, Raymond Poincaré and other eminent European soldiers, statesmen and businessmen who had backed the Industrial Party and the Torgprom.

Five of the accused including Ramzim and Laritchev were sentenced to death for treason; the other three to 10 years in prison. The five men condemned to death asked for a pardon, and it was granted them. Ramzin came to rehabilitate himself [15].

-- Note that at this time Stalin was General Secretary of the AUCP(B) (the new name of the RCP(B)) elected by the CC at the 13th Congress.

-- In March 1931 the so-called Menshevik Trial took place in the Soviet Supreme Court. These were 14 Menshevik charged of various sabotage crimes in collaboration with the Industrial Party. One of them, Groman, “had secured a high position in the Soviet industrial planning bureau (Gosplan), and had tried to sabotage phases of the first Five-Year Plan by drawing up incorrect estimates and lowering production goals in vital industries.”

Between 1928 and 1930 the “All-Union Bureau,” which was the Central Committee of the secret Menshevik organization, received a total of approximately 500,000 rubles from foreign sources. The largest contributor was the Torgprom, but other anti-Soviet groups also made sizable donations to the conspirators and maintained close contact with them. According to the defendants, their chief liaison with the foreign anti-Soviet circles had been the former Russian Menshevik leader Raphael Abromovitch, who had fled to Germany. They were sentenced to between 1 and 10 years in prison.
The Second International denounced the trial of the Mensheviks as “political persecution” by Stalin’s “bureaucratic dictatorship.” Abromovitch issued a statement denying that he had travelled to the Soviet Union and participated in secret conferences there. He admitted, however, that “there has been an illegally active organization of our Party there, whose representatives or individual members are in communication by letter and from the point of view of organization with our foreign delegation in Berlin.”

-- On March 11, 1933, the Soviet government struck the final blow against Torgprom, arresting six British and ten Russians, employees of the Moscow agency of Metro-Vickers which sold turbines and electrical equipment to the USSR. They were accused of espionage and sabotage on behalf of the British Intelligence Service. The Vickers chief in Moscow, C. S. Richards, had hurriedly left for England shortly before the arrests. He was a British agent since the Archangel operation in 1917. Among the prisoners was Allan Monkhouse, an aide of Richards.

-- At the trial (April 12-18), Monkhouse pleaded not guilty to the charges but admitted that he had been an associate of Richards in the Archangel operation. Other British prisoners, L. Thornton and W. MacDonald, recognized the espionage and sabotage and provided details. Of the six British prisoners, one was cleared on grounds of insufficient evidence, Monkhouse and two others were deported, Thornton and MacDonald received sentences respectively of 2 and 3 years imprisonment, but were soon sent to England. Of the Russian accomplices, one was cleared and the others were sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison.

-- The British prisoners later stated that they had been treated well without being coerced by the OGPU (Soviet secret services). Monkhouse, for instance, told a London newspaper: “They were extraordinarily nice to me and exceedingly reasonable in their questioning. My examiners seemed first-rate men who knew their job. The OGPU prison is the last word in efficiency, entirely clean, orderly and well organized. This is the first time that I have ever been arrested, but I have visited English prisons and can attest that the OGPU quarters are much superior [...] OGPU officials [...] showed every concern for my comfort.”

-- The Attorney General Vyshinsky has clearly sought to ascertain the truth. For example, at one point Thornton recanted his signed guilty plea, saying in court that the facts he had written were substantially correct, but that the word "spy" was incorrect and written because he was excited. Having admitted in court that what he had written was “of his own free will' and “without any pressure or coercion” the following dialogue then followed in court:
VYSHINSKY: Nothing was distorted?
THORNTON: No, you did not change anything.
VYSHINSKY: But perhaps [Assistant Prosecutor] Roginsky did?
THORNTON: No.
VYSHINSKY: Perhaps the OGPU distorted it?
THORNTON: No, I signed it with my own hand.
VYSHINSKY: And with your head? When you were writing did you consider and think?
THORNTON: (Does not reply.)
VYSHINSKY: And whose head is thinking for you now?
THORNTON: At present I feel different.

-- In spite of the correctness of the Metro-Vickers's public trial, and as had happened with the trials of Savinkov, Industrial Party and Mensheviks, the Western media and political leaders spared no words to slander the trials. "The London Times spoke of ‘a crowded court, subservient to its persecutors’; the Observer of April 16 described the trial as ‘an ordeal conducted in the name of justice, but without any resemblance to any judicial process known to civilization.’ The Daily Express on April 18 described the Soviet prosecutor Vyshinsky as ‘The Russian with carrot-colored hair and red face spat insults ... hammered on the table.’ The Evening Standard of that same week described the Soviet Defense Adviser Braude as ‘the type of a Jew who could be found any night on Shaftsbury Avenue.’ The British public was given to understand that no genuine trial of the accused was taking place, and that the British engineers were being subjected to the most terrible tortures to demand of them the admission of their guilt. The Daily Express of March 20 stated: ‘Our compatriots are suffering the horrors of a Russian prison!’ The Times, on April 17, stated: ‘Great anxiety is felt about what is happening to Mr. MacDonald in the prison between the sittings of the Court. Those long acquainted with the Chekist methods think his life is in danger.’ Lord Rothermere's Daily Mail, who in a few months would become the semi-official organ of the British Fascist Party of Sir Oswald Mosley, told his readers about a strange ‘Tibetan drug’ which was being used by the OGPU to sap the will power of their ‘victims’."

-- We thus see that many of the lies and slanders later cast upon the Moscow trials of 1936-38 had already been invented since the first public trials of saboteurs, conspirators and traitors in 1930-33, including the mysterious Oriental drug that had the power to force confessions out of the accused.

In the 1930s and under the effect of the great capitalist crisis the imperialist attacks against the USSR would be conducted by more sinister means, with the clear mark of the Nazi-fascist aggression that would lead to WWII.

From Sayers and Kahn: “In 1918, Noi Jordania had headed a German puppet regime in the Caucasus. In 1919, the British drove out the Germans, and Jordania became head of a British-controlled Transcaucasian Federation. In 1924, his headquarters were in Paris. The French Government had placed at his disposal a subsidy of 4,000,000 franc.”

From Sayers and Kahn: “An interesting report of the trial of Boris Savinkov and his sensational testimony to the court can be found in the September 11, 1924, issue of International Press Correspondence (Vol. 4, No. 65).”

From Sayers and Kahn: “Savinkov was treated with remarkable consideration by the Soviet authorities while he was in prison. He was allowed special privileges, given all the books he desired, and granted facilities for writing. But he pined for liberty. On May 7, 1925, he wrote a long appeal to Felix Dzerzhinsky, the head of the Cheka. ‘Either shoot me or give me a chance to work,’ said Savinkov. ‘I was against you; now I am for you. I cannot endure the half and half existence of being neither for nor against you, merely sitting in prison and becoming one of its inhabitants.’ He pleaded for pardon and offered to do anything the Government would require of him. His plea was rejected. Soon after, Savinkov committed suicide by throwing himself from a four-story window in the prison.”

Churchill: «I do not think you should judge Savinkov too harshly. He was placed in a terrible position; and only those who have sustained successfully such an ordeal have a full right to pronounce censure. At any rate I shall wait to hear the end of the story before changing my view about Savinkov»

From Sayers and Kahn: “The facts regarding Captain Sidney Reilly’s anti-Soviet operations in the United States and his last secret mission in Soviet Russia are taken from Britain’s Master Spy, Sidney Reilly’s Narrative written by Himself, edited and compiled by His Wife.
The material on Henry Ford’s anti-Semitic and anti-democratic activities in the early 1920’s is drawn largely from the sensational series of articles by Norman Hapgood which appeared under the title “The Inside Story of Henry Ford’s Jew Mania” in the June–November, 1922, issues of Hearst’s International.
The files of Henry Ford’s Dearborn Independent are replete with anti-Semitic and anti-democratic propaganda.

From Sayers and Kahn: “According to the February 8, 1923, edition of the New York Times, Vice-President Auer of the Bavarian Diet publicly stated:
The Bavarian Diet has long had information that the Hitler movement was partly financed by an American anti-Semitic chief, who is Henry Ford. Mr. Ford’s interest in the Bavarian anti-Jewish movement began a year ago when one of Mr. Ford’s agents came in contact with Dietrich Eikhart, the notorious Pan-German.... The agent returned to America and immediately Mr. Ford’s money began coming to Munich.
Herr Hitler openly boasts of Mr. Ford’s support and praises Mr. Ford not as a great individuality but as a great anti-Semite.
In the small, unimpressive office on Cornelius Street in Munich which was Adolf Hitler’s headquarters, a single framed photograph hung on the wall. The picture was of Henry Ford.”

Glyn Roberts’s biography of Sir Henri Deterding contains many revelations of the hectic anti-Soviet intrigues in which Deterding, Hoffmann and their associates were involved during this period.”

A Record of the Trial of the Industrial Party, held in Moscow NovemberDecember, 1930 (New York, Workers Library Publishers, 1931).
From Sayers and Kahn: “The account of the meeting in Paris in 1928 attended by Professor Ramzin at which Denisov announced that the French General Staff had drawn up a plan of attack against Soviet Russia is drawn from the court testimony of Professor Ramzin and others before the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR as recorded in Wreckers on Trial, A Record of the Trial of the Industrial Party, held in Moscow NovemberDecember, 1930 (New York, Workers Library Publishers, 1931). This record also contains the details of the plan of attack on the USSR and testimony regarding the various negotiations carried on by Ramzin and others with French, British and German political and industrial personalities.

The announcement was: “I bring you the news that the French General Staff has formed a special commission, headed by Colonel Joinville, to organize the attack against the Soviet Union!”
“Colonel Joinville had formerly commanded the French army of intervention in Siberia in 1918. At the time of the Torgprom meeting in Paris, the French General Staff included Foch, Petain, and Weygand. Foch died in 1929; his personal adjutant, René L’Hopital, subsequently became President of the notorious Comité Franco-Allemand founded at the end of 1935 by the Nazi agent Otto Abetz, to spread Nazi and anti-Soviet propaganda in France.”

Um registo literal do julgamento dos engenheiros Vickers em Abril de 1933 é dado no Trial of the Vickers Engineers: Official Verbatim Report: Proceedings of Special Session of the Supreme Court of the U.S.S.R. in Moscow, April 12-19, 1933, três volumes (Moscovo, Editora da Lei do Estado, 1933).
From Sayers and Kahn: “The facts regarding the trial of the Industrial Party conspirators in the winter of 1930 are taken from contemporary newspaper accounts and from the record of the trial as published in Wreckers on Trial, op. cit..
Testimony from the Menshevik Trial in March 1931 is recorded in The Menshevik Trial (New York, Workers Library Publishers, 1931).
A collection of contemporary statements regarding the Menshevik trial by émigré Russian Mensheviks and their associates in the Second International is presented in the pamphlet The Moscow Trial and the Labour and Socialist International (London, The Labour Party, 1931); this pamphlet includes an article by Raphael Abramovitch entitled ”My Journey to Moscow,” in which he denies certain of the accusations made against him at the trial but admits the existence of a secret conspiratorial Menshevik apparatus in Soviet  Russia.
A verbatim record of the trial of the Vickers engineers in April 1933 is given in the Trial of the Vickers Engineers: Official Verbatim Report: Proceedings of Special Session of the Supreme Court of the U.S.S.R. in Moscow, April 12-19, 1933, three volumes (Moscow, State Law Publishing House, 1933).
A very interesting and outspoken account of the discussions between the British Ambassador to Russia, Sir Esmond Ovey, and the Soviet Commissar of Foreign Affairs, Maxim Litvinov, regarding the arrest and trial of the Vickers engineers may be found in the Red Paper issued in Moscow by the Soviet Government on April 16, 1933. Allan Monkhouse’s own version of his arrest and trial by the Soviet Government is contained in his book Moscow, 19111933 (Boston, Little, Brown and Company, 1934).
A brief but comprehensive account of the reaction of the British press to the trial of the Vickers engineers can be found in Maurice Dobb’s The Press and the Moscow Trial (London, Friends of the Soviet Union, 1933).

“Two days after the completion of the trial, Professor Ramzin and the four other defendants who had been sentenced to death petitioned the Soviet Supreme Court for a reprieve. The court granted the petition and commuted the sentences of death to sentences of ten years’ impris-onment on the grounds that Ramzin and his colleagues had been the tools of the real conspirators who were outside the Soviet Union. In the years following the trial, Professor Ramzin, who was granted every opportunity by the Soviet authorities for new scientific work, became completely won over to the Soviet way of life and began making valuable contributions to the industrial program of the U.S.S.R. On July 7, 1943, Professor Ramzin was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Joseph Stalin Prize of $30,000 for the invention of a simplified turbo-generator, said to be better than any other in the world. Under a decree issued by the Kremlin, the turbo-generator bears the inventor’s name.”
