Imperialismo Hoje, predito há 15 anos | Imperialism Today, foreseen 15 years ago

Lemos recentemente um livro fascinante de João Varela Gomes (VG): Esta Democracia Filofascista (edição do autor, distribuição Terramar, Lisboa, 1999). VG discorre sobre vários temas relacionados com o bom acolhimento que as democracias burguesas «ocidentais» dispensam a fascistas e suas ideias. Notavelmente em Portugal, onde teve lugar em 1974-75 uma revolução «rumo ao socialismo». Um aspecto importante do livro é que as suas teses continuam actuais, com previsões confirmadas. De há 15 anos atrás. Em particular, no capítulo II intitulado «Imperialismo, Hoje».    O coronel Varela Gomes tem hoje 90 anos. Uma vida de luta pela liberdade do povo, de homem vertical que nunca se vergou ao fascismo nem ao capitalismo. Como capitão, comandou o histórico assalto ao quartel de Beja, em 1962, em pleno fascismo. A acção não teve êxito. Ferido gravemente, VG esteve entre a vida e a morte. Julgado pelo tribunal «Plenário» fascista em 1964, aí fez um depoimento de invulgar coragem. Contra a vontade do seu advogado, como disse a esposa: «ele foi para tribunal instigar que outros fizessem o que eles [VG e outros] tinham feito. Instigar à revolta». Passou seis anos de prisão maior com maus-tratos. A esposa, corajosa antifascista, também esteve presa. Com a Revolução de Abril, VG foi integrado no exército e teve acção destacada no processo revolucionário, designadamente na célebre 5.ª Divisão do EMGFA, o único apoio firme da revolução, do MFA. Afastado e perseguido pela contra-revolução do 25 de Novembro, VG nunca deixou de denunciar os contra-revolucionários, mormente os soaristas aliados à CIA. Figura incómoda do actual regime filofascista, VG tem denunciado certeiramente em livros, jornais e revistas, o imperialismo, o neoliberalismo e a venalidade de renegados e esquerdalhos. Tem também dado contribuições importantíssimas sobre a história da resistência e da revolução portuguesas, de que possui conhecimento profundo e testemunho pessoal. Os seus livros (todos excelentes!) tiveram de ser editados pelo autor ou por pequenas editoras amigas. VG foi homenageado em 2012 na Voz do Operário. Apraz-nos registar que a AOFA se lembrou dos seus 90 anos como «viçoso guerreiro, militante por uma sociedade igualitária e justa» (http://aofaportugal.blogspot.pt/2014/05/joao-varela-gomes-90-anosmuitos-amigos.html). *    *    * Folheemos o «Imperialismo, Hoje», capítulo II do livro. VG começa por referir a desagregação da URSS e consequências disso na hegemonia imperial dos EUA, desmascarando de passagem a tese dos «dois imperialismos». Passando à agressão americana na Jugoslávia, diz assim: «Torna-se cada dia mais patente a semelhança do plano estratégico em curso, com a Mittelleuropa do sonho da expansão germânica, retomado por Hitler [...]: um só bloco económico estendendo-se desde o mar do Norte ao golfo Pérsico, enfeudando os estados e as nações que habitassem esse espaço vital (na concepção imperialista germânica). Provoca um frémito de terror constatar que a Croácia se tornou independente devido ao auxílio militar alemão (instrutores, equipamento, doutrina); com a recuperação dos ustachis (nazis croatas); a benção do Vaticano (segunda chancelaria a reconhecer o novo estado, logo a seguir à alemã); com a instauração de um regime de censura e partido único dirigido pelo sinistro Tudjman. Igualmente pavorosa foi a criação artificial de uma Bósnia muçulmana [...] hoje em dia, para todos os efeitos, um protectorado americano, exercido directamente por um procônsul born in USA.»    Mais adiante, uma previsão clara (há 15 anos atrás!) do que veio depois: «Pode com facilidade adivinhar-se qual a fase que se segue na expansão do domínio americano/Nato no flanco sul da Europa. Consolidado o protectorado, com o respectivo dispositivo militar de ocupação implantado até à Macedónia [...] a progressão para Este não encontrará obstáculos dignos de registo». VG prevê a fácil absorção da Roménia e Bulgária, para então dizer: «Depois fica em caminho o mítico objectivo do espaço vital hitleriano: a Ucrânia. Rendição aparentemente mais complicada, mas não o suficiente para deter a voracidade hegemónica imperialista. Já por lá passeiam, impunemente, pelas ruas de Kiev, os antigos colaboradores com o invasor nazi, ostentando fardas e braçadeiras com a cruz gamada.»    Seguem-se apreciações sobre a ONU -- «No presente quadro de ruptura do direito internacional -- com a ONU condenada a seguir o destino inglório da sua antecessora, a Sociedade das Nações; com a aceitação do princípio da agressão com fins humanitários (passe o paradoxo)» --, e sobre «onde se situam, que partido tomam os jornalistas, cronistas e opiniocratas em geral, incluindo os que manejam o discurso historiográfico» -- «Pois no sítio do costume, onde é que havia de ser! Ao lado dos poderosos, na sua função de cães de guarda do sistema, repetindo como papagaios a voz do dono [...] Alguns até querem ser mais papistas que o papa. Na ânsia de anunciar mortes e massacres, de exaltar as maravilhas destrutivas do aparato bélico americano, o poder mortífero dos soldados humanitários, tornam-se repulsivos, mesmo obscenos. (Ao espírito ocorre a imagem de funcionários nazis congratulando-se pela produtividade do último modelo de câmara crematória [...])».    Por fim, um olhar sobre os EUA -- «Ora, parece indispensável, em observação final, esclarecermo-nos um pouco sobre a identidade político-social da superpotência que actualmente domina os destinos do planeta, e, presumivelmente, continuará a fazê-lo pelas próximas décadas» --, desta forma:    «Um primeiro aspecto digno de realce envolve a tradição moralizante da acção diplomática dos EUA, numa pretensiosa postura de superioridade ética, fazendo gala dum ridículo puritanismo [...]. Ora, não pode haver contraste maior, contradição mais flagrante, que a que existe entre essa alienação moralista e a realidade brutal da formação histórica, de costa-a-costa da federação dos estados americanos do norte». Referindo várias guerras de agressão expansionista dos EUA até «à presente façanha, de hipocrisia refinada, da “agressão com fins humanitários”», VG recorda que os EUA «autoproclamados apóstolos dos direitos das minorias étnicas, nasceram e cresceram levando a cabo um dos mais terríveis genocídios (uma das mais completas «limpezas étnicas») da história da humanidade [...] mediante o extermínio cruel e sistemático da totalidade da população original ameríndia, da qual restam uns quantos exemplares, confinados em reservas como animais raros para exposição» para concluir «A realidade americana actual é filha e herdeira desse longo passado de massacres e violência, de ódio racial, da lei do mais forte, de pistoleiros à solta com licença para matar, de aventureiros ávidos de confisco, de apropriação e roubo. [...] Os EUA não têm pois a mínima autoridade moral para dar lições de conduta ética seja a quem for».    Passando ao tempo actual, VG assinala as condições esquálidas em que vivem as «minorias» étnicas «Vítimas da desconfiança latente da burguesia instalada, sujeitos a apartheid habitacional e social, vigiados por milícias armadas racistas, por múltiplas organizações de defensores da ordem e do american way of life.», acrescentando «Com efeito, a sociedade americana não é -- nunca foi, nem conseguirá vir a sê-lo -- o melting pot de que se orgulhavam os idealistas wilsonianos. Melhor comparado, é uma marmita de pressão onde fervilham, sem se decomporem, contradições, ódios, conflitos raciais e de classes, o pavor de perder estatuto social, a insegurança» o que logo nos traz à mente a brutalidade, bestialidade e hipocrisia da repressão dos humildes e explorados nos «incidentes» de Ferguson e noutros locais. Uma constante da história dos EUA (com a KKK e grupos afins à solta e impunes).    Pelo meio, uma reflexão -- «Sim, há boa gente nos States. Infelizmente não são suficientes para alterarem a prática política e a ideologia militante da superpotência americana. A qual continua a ser dirigida pelos interesses da grande burguesia capitalista, agora na fase da globalização económica e financeira, e prosseguindo um projecto de domínio mundial» -- para finalizar assim a análise dos EUA, quanto a nós com inteira pertinência:    «A direcção imperialista tem perfeita consciência das tensões explosivas que se entrecruzam no interior da sociedade americana. E essa é uma das motivações -- e não das menores -- do expansionismo exterior, das agressões, ingerências e conquistas. Já assim o tinha entendido o império romano no início da nossa era. No dia em que, por qualquer razão, o escape da expansão externa não possa mais ser utilizado, em que se perfile no horizonte da classe média americana o espectro da depressão económica, rebentará com enorme fragor a marmita de ódios e desesperos ocultos, sob a capa da hipocrisia ética/religiosa/moralista. A violência irracional faz de tal modo parte integrante da personalidade americana que, caso a humanidade vier a soçobrar no holocausto nuclear sê-lo-á, sem sombra de dúvida, por iniciativa da classe governante do último império capitalista.»    Fazemos votos para que a divulgação deste pequeníssimo segmento da obra de Varela Gomes possa motivar novas leituras deste lutador tenaz, bem formado e informado, de prosa clara e incisiva.

We finished reading a fascinating book written by João Varela Gomes (VG): “Esta Democracia Filofascista” (“This Philofascist Democracy”, author’s edition, distributed by Terramar, Lisbon, 1999). VG goes through several topics related to the good hosting granted by the «western» bourgeois democracies to fascists and their ideas. Notably in Portugal, where a revolution «on the way to socialism» took place in 1974-75. A relevant feature of the book is that its theses do still hold true, and with confirmed predictions. From 15 years ago. Namely, in chapter II entitled “Imperialism, Today”.    Coronel Varela Gomes is now 90 years old. A lifetime fighting for people’s freedom, as a vertical man, who never bent to fascism and to capitalism. As a captain, he commanded the historical attack to the barracks of Beja in 1962, in full fascism. The action didn’t succeed. Seriously wounded, VG was then between life and death. He stood trial by the fascist “Plenary” court in 1964, where he made a speech of unusual courage, against the will of his attorney, as told by his wife: «he went to court to instigate others to do what they [VG and others] had done. To instigate to revolt». He passed six years in major prison and ill-treated. The wife, a courageous antifascist, was also put in jail. VG was integrated in the army with the April Revolution and had an outstanding action in the revolutionary process, namely in the famous 5th Division of the Gen. Staff of A. F., the only firm support of the revolution, of the Movement of A.F. Banned and persecuted by the counter-revolution of 25 November, VG never stopped exposing the counter-revolutionaries, above all the Soares-ists allied to the CIA. A discomforting character to the present philofascist regime, VG denounced right on target the imperialism, the neoliberalism, the venality of renegades and “leftoids”, in books, newspapers and magazines. He also gave outstanding contributions to the history of Portuguese resistance and revolution, of which he has deep knowledge and personal witnessing. His books (all excellent!) had to be edited by the author or by small friendly editors. A homage was paid to VG at the Worker’s Voice in 2012. We also note with pleasure that the Officers’ Association of the Armed Forces praised his 90th anniversary as a “fresh warrior, militant for a fair and egalitarian society” (http://aofaportugal.blogspot.pt/2014/05/joao-varela-gomes-90-anosmuitos-amigos.html). *    *    * Let us browse through the book chapter II, “Imperialism Today”. VG starts by mentioning the USSR implosion and its consequences to the imperial US hegemony, unmasking en passant the “two imperialisms” thesis. Addressing the American aggression to Yugoslavia, he says: “The similarity of the unfolding strategic plan with the Mittelleuropa of the German expansion, recovered by Hitler, becomes each day clearer [...]: a single economic block spanning from the North Sea to the Persian Gulf, subduing states and nations that inhabited this vital space (in the German imperialist conception). One feels a shiver of terror seeing that Croatia became independent due to German military help (instructors, equipment, doctrine); with the recuperation of the ustachis (Croatian Nazis); the Vatican blessing (the second chancellery to recognize the new State, after the German one); the establishing of a censorship regime with a single party directed by the sinister  Tudjman. Equally horrid was the artificial creation of a Muslim Bosnia [...] today, for all purposes, an American protectorate directly exercised by a proconsul  born in USA [sic]”.    Further on, a clear forecast (15 years ago!) of what came next: “One can easily guess which stage comes next in the expansion of the American/NATO domination to the southern European flank. Once consolidated the protectorate, with the respective military apparatus of occupation implanted up to Macedonia [...] the Eastward progression will not encounter worth mentioning impediments”. VG foresees the easy absorption of Romania and Bulgaria, and then says: “Afterwards and on the way, the mythical objective of Hitler's vital space: Ukraine. An apparently more complicated subduing but not sufficient to detain the imperialist hegemonic voraciousness. We already find there, walking with impunity along the streets of Kiev, the old collaborators of the Nazi invader, ostentatiously displaying uniforms and armbands with the swastika”.    VG then presents appreciations on the UN – “In the present framework of breach of international laws -- with the UN doomed to the inglorious destiny of its predecessor the League of Nations; accepting the principle of aggression with humanitarian aims (pass the paradox)” --, and on “where are situated, which party follow journalists, chroniclers, opinion makers in general, including those handling the historiographic discourse” – “Well, they situate in the usual place, where do you think they are? Side by side with the power-holders, in their mission of watchdogs of the system, repeating as parrots the master’s voice [...] Some even want to be more popish than the Pope. In their eager to announce deaths and massacres, to exalt the destructive wonders of the American bellicose apparatus, and the deadly power of the humanitarian soldiers, they become repulsive, even obscene. (The image of Nazi clerks congratulating on the productivity of the last model of crematory oven, jumps to mind [...])”.    Finally, a look to the USA – “Now, it seems indispensable, as a final observation, to clarify ourselves a bit about the politico-social identity of the superpower that presently dominates the destinies of the planet and, presumably, will go on doing that for the next decades” -- , in this manner:    “A first aspect worth emphasizing entails the moralizing tradition of the USA diplomatic activities, in a pretentious posture of ethical superiority, boasting a ridiculous puritanism [...]. Now, there can be no bigger contrast, more flagrant contradiction, than the one existing between that moralist alienation and the brutal reality of the historic formation, from coast to coast of the federation of the North-American States”. Mentioning several wars of expansionist aggression of the US up to “the present achievement of refined hypocrisy, the ‘aggression with humanitarian aims’”, VG reminds us that the US “self-proclaimed apostles of the rights of ethnical minorities, were born and grew up carrying through one of the most terrible genocides (one of the most thorough ‘ethnical cleansings’) of the history of mankind [...] by the cruel and systematic extermination of the totality of the original Amerindian population, of which remain a few exemplars, confined to reservations as  rare animals on display. The American reality of nowadays is daughter and heir of that long past of massacres and violence, of racial hatred, of the law of the strongest one, of gunmen on the loose with license to kill, of adventurers with a thirst for confiscation, for illegal appropriation and robbery [...] The USA do not then have the slightest moral authority to lecture on moral codes of conduct to no matter whoever is”.    Moving to the present time, VG comments on the squalid conditions in which live the ethnic “minorities”, “Victims of the latent mistrust of the well-installed bourgeoisie, subject to housing and social apartheid, under vigilance by racist armed militias, by multiple organizations of defenders of the order and the American way of life [sic]”, adding: “In fact, the American society is not -- never was and never will succeed to be -- the melting pot  [sic] which the Wilsonian idealists were proud of. As a better analogy, it is a pressure cooker where boil, without decomposing, contradictions, hatreds, racial and class conflicts, the dread of losing social status, the insecurity”, and this brings to mind the brutality, the bestiality and hypocrisy of the repression of the downtrodden and explored ones in the “incidents” of Ferguson and other places. A systematic phenomenon in the history of USA (with the KKK and similar groups on the loose and with impunity).    Incidentally, a consideration -- «Yes, there are good people in the States [sic]. They are unfortunately not enough to change the political practice and the militant ideology of the American superpower, which goes on being led by the interests of the capitalist big bourgeoisie, now in the stage of  economic and financial globalization, pursuing a project of world domination” – ending his overview of the analysis of the USA as follows, and in our opinion with entire pertinence:    “The imperialist leadership is perfectly aware of the explosive tensions criss-crossing the heart of the American society; one of the motivations – and not the smallest one – of the external expansionism, of the aggression, meddling and conquest. The same had already been understood by the Roman empire at the beginning of our age. In the day that, by any reason, the escape valve of the external expansion can no more be utilized, that the specter of economic depression stands up on the horizon of the American middle class, the boiling pot of hatreds and despairs, hidden under the cloak of the ethic/religious/moral hypocrisy will explode with huge noise. The irrational violence is so much a constituent part of the American personality that, in case mankind collapses in a nuclear holocaust, it will be, no shadow of a doubt, by the initiative of the governing class of the last capitalist empire.”    We hope that the publicizing of this very short segment of Varela Gomes works may motivate new readings of this tenacious fighter, well-formed and informed, of clear and sharp prose.
